# What Is Average Consumption Rate?

## Explore what average consumption rate is, why it's important, and where to find it. 

Consumption rate is one of the most telling indicators when it comes to audience engagement. In this article, we’ll explain:

- What show consumption rate and episode consumption rate are
- Why they’re important
- Where to find them on CoHost
- How you can increase your show’s consumption rate

 

### Average Show Consumption Rate

#### **What it is:**

The average consumption rate of your show is a percentage value of the average consumption (or playtime) that your audience has listened to an episode. 

The consumption rate is calculated on a percentage basis, so the closer you can get to 100%, the better. 

#### **Why it’s important:**

The average consumption rate is an important metric because it indicates how well your content retains your audience overall. Instead of solely relying on metrics like downloads or unique listeners, which only indicate whether someone has listened to the episode, this metric provides a percentage of the actual duration audiences spend listening to your podcast.

In general, a show consumption rate of 75-80% is a solid place to start, but we suggest aiming for anything above 80%.

#### **Where to find it:**

Your show’s average consumption rate can be found at the top of your CoHost dashboard. This is the average consumption rate of all of your episodes combined.
